Emtec Energy successfully delivered a landmark 753.13kWp roof-mounted solar PV system at Scottish Water Horizons’ Milngavie Water Treatment Works. This is one of the largest and most strategically important clean water facilities in Scotland. Serving over 700,000 households in Glasgow and West Dunbartonshire, the site now benefits from a reliable source of renewable energy, significantly reducing its carbon footprint and energy costs.
The system comprises 1,421 Longi 530W modules and six SolarEdge inverters. It is engineered to generate approximately 661,030 kWh of clean energy annually. This accounts for 8% of the site’s electricity needs and offsets an estimated 120 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent each year, which is comparable to eliminating the emissions from 66 return flights between Glasgow and New York. This project is a major step towards achieving Scottish Water’s goal of net zero emissions by 2040.
Emtec Energy’s project team designed the system to maximise the available roof space while avoiding any disruption to daily operations. The installation also demonstrated environmental sensitivity, including careful management of scaffolding to protect the local bat population. This highlights Emtec’s strong commitment to ecological stewardship.
From design through to commissioning, the project showcased Emtec Energy’s capability to deliver complex renewable infrastructure within operationally sensitive environments. The team's collaboration with Scottish Water stakeholders ensured clear communication, timely delivery, and adherence to the highest standards of safety and quality.
This project is part of a growing portfolio of solar schemes at Scottish Water sites. It reaffirms Emtec Energy’s role as a leading partner in Scotland’s transition to a low-carbon future, where clean water and clean energy work in harmony.
“We were extremely impressed with the professionalism and seamless execution of the solar PV project at Milngavie Water Treatment Works. Emtec Energy demonstrated exceptional attention to detail, including careful management of scaffolding to protect the local bat population - a clear testament to their commitment to environmental stewardship. They collaborated effectively with other stakeholders to meet all requirements and maintained excellent communication throughout. Their strong project management kept everything running smoothly and on schedule.”
